THE SPRING 2006 SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS GET GOING
VALID FOR THE THE FIRST COMBINATION OF GOLF/SAILING IN SICILY
On Saturday the 6th of May the first sailing race of the 2006 Spring
Championships from Palermo – Terrasini will take place, organised by
Palermo’s Rowing Club. The first four to arrive will be chosen to
welcome aboard 4 professional golf players for the Palermo –Mondello
race to be held on Sunday the 21st of May, bringing to an end the
sailing/golf combination, organised especially for the World Festival on
the Beach.
The two sports, golf and sailing, will be brought together in a single
race which up until now has never took place in Sicily, and will finish
with the sailing race Palermo – Mondello.
Professional Golf players will play against each other in a 9 hole golf
course at the Villa Airoldi Golf Club. A prize will be given at every
hole to the player who can hole the golf ball with the least shots. At
the end of the ninth hole of the course the winner will be the person
who has won the most money.
A draw will decide the placement of the first four professional golf
players who will join the first four boats that arrive first in the race
to be held on the 6th of May. The race on Sunday the 21st of May, valid
as second race in the 2006 Spring Championships, will be the final race
of this combination and will be used to establish the winner of the
first golf/sailing challenges held in Sicily.
This sports event will be organised by Palermo’s Rowing Club, along with
the collaboration from the Albaria and the Villa Airoldi Golf Club.

Traina: There couldn’t have been a better occasion than the
World Festival on the Beach to bring together this combination of
sailing/golf, using the classic Palermo-Mondello race, which has now
reached its 16th edition. We’re sure that these two sports together will
bring more attraction to the event.

Umberto La Commare: Putting together two fantastic sports like
sailing and golf, the first linked with the blue of the sea, the second
with the green of the grass, is surely to be an innovation in Sicilian
Sport. Palermo boasts a long and glorious tradition in the sailing
sector but can’t say the same for golf. Given the possibility to
participate in this event with the Albaria, who invented the World
Festival on the Beach, will give the chance to many yachtsmen to see the
beauty at the Villa Airoldi Golf Club and to come closer to the game.
It’s a satisfaction for me to see an event included in the field of the
16th Spring Championships organised by the Palermo’s rowing Club, in
which I have been a member for nearly 30 years.

The commitment from the organisers has made it possible to make a unique
event in Sicily, at the World Festival on the Beach. The combination of
golf/sailing other than giving the opportunity to appreciate the event
offered by the athletes of these two sports, is an evident signal of
collaboration between representatives and fans from different sports and
also an occasion to promote two important tourist activities in Palermo.

Savagnone: There couldn’t have been a better sports combination
of that of the Golf/Sailing, that sees two sports with the most antique
and worthy traditions, in which those who practise these sports share
not only a passion for nature, but also a particular spirit of
competition, a challenge with ourselves, in which the opponent to beat
is also a natural element, whether its the sea or the golf course. In
thanking the well known organisers of the World Festival on the Beach
for the opportunity given to us, I would like to hope that one day, not
far away, in Palermo and in Sicily there will be as many golf players as
there are yachtsmen.
