World Festival on the Beach
THE PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY CLOSES THE XXI EDITION OF THE WORLD
FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH
A GREAT CELEBRATION OF SPORT, MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
Four words to describe the 2006 edition of the World Festival on the
Beach: sport, music, sea, fun. This years festival closed as like last
years with breaking records in Mondello, with a huge success which has
become quite a normality for the event, an event that is big and
variegated uniting different sports, music, lots of colours in one
celebration.
The final prize-giving was held in the Valdesi Square in Mondello. The
President of the Albaria Vincenzo Pottino and Antonio Ventura Managing
Director of Festina, a gold sponsor of the event, awarded the athletes
with their trophies in the different sports events held at the 2006
edition of the World Festival on the Beach.
As in other editions of the World Festival on the Beach there were
plenty athletes taking place, around 600 of them came to Mondello’s gulf
to participate in the windsurf races, kite-surf, beach volley, sailing
and the golf debut.
The New Jazz Festival celebrated its fifth birthday, this year it was
dedicated in memory of Enzo Randisi, one of the historic organisers and
creators of the New Jazz Festival who sadly passed away. With music from
Zero Assoluto, Sugarfree, Fausto Leali, L’aura and Seba, and the
animation from the radio show the Zoo, (radio 105), spectators came in
their thousands every evening to Mondello, spectators that added to
those who already were on the beach at Mondello welcoming the summer sun
and watching the European Mistral Class Windsurf Championships taking
place in the sea.
Marco Casagrande made success for himself, the athlete from the Albaria
Windsurf Club, who is nearly 30 years reached an important stage of his
career. Ever since the first race he was first amongst the Europeans and
always behind the unbeatable Hong Kong team, who were well prepared as
athletes and coached by someone who in some ways is at home in Mondello,
the windsurf legend from New Zealand, Bruce Kendall. He has participated
as an athlete in previous editions of the event held in Mondello and who
today came as a coach to the Hong Kong team before returning back in the
water to attempt his umpteenth challenge, participating at another
edition of the Olympic Games, not on a table like the one he used in Los
Angeles and Seoul, winning a bronze and gold medal, but this time on a
tornado table, along with another wind-surfer from New Zealand who is
another frequent athlete to Mondello, Aaron McIntosh.
Last year it was Nikos Kaklamanakis who didn’t want to miss the Mistral
World Championships, as a coach and this year Bruce Kendall’s turn in
taking part in this sporting event of the World Festival on the Beach,
which is hard to say no to a qualitative profile which gets in the water
every year. Last year the One Design lost its Olympic status, but
certainly hasn’t lost its strength or its diffusion, bringing lots of
participants to Mondello giving their usual performance that has done,
for years.
Like every year there was also Beach Volley, with the Pro-series
Tournament which brought to Mondello a performance from players who play
in the International circuit of Beach Volley. The Spanish Olympic
champion Fabio Diez and Giorgia Cuti from Palermo took the titles “King
of the Beach” and “Queen of the Beach”, watched by the many spectators
who filled every seat, showing just how many people like to watch this
summer sport.
New for the 2006 edition was the Golf, which the World Festival on the
Beach brought closer to the traditional events of the Festival with the
first Driving Contest at sunrise on the beach and with the sailing/golf
combination, in which these two sports completely different from one
another were joined together in a fascinating and spectacular sport.
Bringing together golf and sailing professionals in triumph of sport,
nature and emotions.
Innovative ideas, a natural contest of great captivation and respect for
sport and its values, music performances that please music lovers of all
kinds. This is the World Festival on the Beach.
