WORLD FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH
Mondello's past can be remembered amongst some of this years new ideas

A week of sport, shows and culture all set in the landscape of Mondello, one of Palermo's fishing villages.
In May the World Festival on the Beach returns with its 22nd edition. Organised by the Albaria and Palermo's
local council and backed up by the Sicilian Regional Council since 2001. There are plenty of new ideas in this years
surprise program, ideas that will accompany the traditional events that make up the Festival, an event that is directed
towards everybody's taste, set up in a pedestrian zone in Mondello that doesn't cause any disruption to the local traffic, with plenty of entrances and exits. The organisers of this event haven't been put off by the amount of the problems that are created in Sicily, problems that slow down the organisation of any event, they have carried on their work and are already organising the 2008 edition.
The historic group from the Albaria who organise the event along with those who collaborate and private sponsors, will once again take on their "mission impossible", which can guarantee its audience a great party that brings the summer in.
The protagonist of the event is Mondello with its sandy beaches and the tropical colours of the sea. All this is only 7 kilometres from Palermo and a few hours away from some of Sicily's hidden treasures, passed on by the various dominators of the island (phoenicians, greeks, arabs, normans,).
There will be a step back in time in Mondello with two new ideas, starting off with a building the "garitta del dazio", which up until the 900's stood before Piazza Valdesi, Mondello, which formed a boundary up until the 20's where battles were carried out. And it will be here that the World Festival on the beach will hold a fencing display. Seaplanes will be back in Mondello's skies after 80 years, they were once assembled and winged for their first test run here.
There will be the Sicily Grand Prix, valid as third race of the National Olypic Class RS:X Circuit and characterized by an "open" formula,a competition which will see athletes competing in the different table categories. The windsurfing champion Valeria Zullo will be up for a challenge in the "one woman show". The athlete from Rome, took a bronze medal in the last RS:X Italian Championships, Valeria will take on the 32 miles
windsurfing from the coast of Ustica to Mondello. At the Festival there will be the catamaran's A Class sailing race. During the weekend there will also be the Palermo-Mondello sprint, a sailing race from Palermo to Mondello. Again this year we can find the event that brings sails and golf together. There will be a skin game contest on a golf course and a the new variant of the beach golf, that will be played in Mondello beach. Between the 18th and the 20th of May there will be the international beach volley tournament, before this the students beach volley tournament will take place, last year there was more than 450 pupils from Palermo and its outskirts. Another event to be held at the World Festival on the Beach are the paratrooper and the acrobatic aeroplane shows.
Towards the evening for who wants to have a relaxing walk along the beach without the noise of traffic and the smog in the air, can take part in different shows that are part of the World Festival on the Beach program. There will be jazz, classical music and pop concerts, with artists who are well known and those who are not so well known but all with one goal, to celebrate the 22nd World Festival on the Beach. The Photo Contest will as always be another event
at the Festival which calls upon who loves to take pictures to gather the Festival in a click.
