CATAMARANS CLASS A RACE IN MONDELLO
GAETANO PENNINO TAKES THE LEAD
Today in Mondello’s gulf just a few days away from the beginning of the
World Festival on the Beach 2007, the catamarans class A boats held some
trial races. These catamarans will be protagonists at the Festival with
a race that qualifies for a place in the European Championships. Four
races were held today with nine competitors in Mondello’s water, they
had a light wind blowing that allowed to the races to undergo with no
problems. Gaetano Pennino, member of the Fidestime Club Palermo, and ex
member of the Albaria Club, won the races today, he was the only
competitor from Palermo. Thanks to two firsts and two seconds, Pennino
went better that Luigi Blancato and Pierluigi Biffo. Daniele Cicciarelli
from Ragusa didn’t make it in the first three. After the races were
finished Pennino said, “A good race as always in Mondello’s water, with
a good light wind, these boats go better with a light wind, like we had
today”.
The athletes had the chance to test out the race circuit before the
races that are in program next weekend. The event will be a national
open, the second Italian trials to be held for a place in the 2007
European championships, this event will be held on Saturday the 19th and
Sunday the 20th of May. Around 30 boats will compete, starting from
Mondello, on a triangular race circuit with a maximum of three races a
day.
On Friday the 18th of May there will be the long distance race for the
catamarans class A from Mondello to Isola delle Femmine. All the best
Italian Athletes will be present, such as the Sicilians Gaetano Pennino,
Luigi Blancato, Daniele Cicciarella, Tonino Agosta, Filippo Bottini,
also the president of the National Cat-A class, Marco Gaeti, and Manuel
Vaccari, who holds 1st place in the national rankings 2006 and 8th in
the 2006 World Championships.
