VALERIA ZULLO ON ATTACK FOR THE 32 MILES BETWEEN USTICA AND MONDELLO
The countdown has began for the “One Woman Show”, the crossing of
about 32 miles from Ustica to Mondello on her own with her surfboard and
sail, Valeria Zullo will try this challenge tomorrow at 11.00. The wind
surfer won a bronze medal in 2006 on her RS:X Olympic table, she will be
accompanied tomorrow morning at dawn to the island of Ustica, where she
can begin the first day out of four to try and complete this challenge.
The weather conditions should be between 12 to 17 knots in a
north-western direction which should allow the athlete to reach Mondello
in 6 to 7 hours, weather permitting.
At around 18:00 the sail of the RRD table should be visible in the gulf
of Mondello followed by a boat who will accompany her throughout her
journey aiding assistance if needed.
Some of the biggest difficulties she will have on her journey will be
the fear of sharks and being in open waters, Valeria Zullo said “I’ve
been training constantly for two months, going between Fregene and Santa
Marinella trying to get used to a long distance of 32 miles in open
waters, without seeing any land and with the possibility of meeting
sharks, especially around Ustica, It won’t be easy but I’m ready to be
the first woman to complete this challenge”.
