FOR THE THIRD EVENING OF
THE PALERMO MUSIC SHOW JAZZ FROM THE SICILIAN ORCHESTRA WITH EMIL
RICHARDS AND GIANLUCA PELLERITO The Sicilian Jazz Orchestra will open the evening at 20:30, established by Ignazio Tarsia in the 70’s the Sicilian Jazz Orchestra has undergone an intense and continuos activity in the hands of some of the best orchestra directors in the world. In 1990 it was a supporter to the “International event of Soul Music” in Palermo and in 1991 it carried out for first in Europe “Epitaph” by Charles Mingus, under the direction of Gunther Schuller. Whilst for their contemporary collection of music the SJO took part in the 1994 event “Sounds of the 1900’s”, promoted by the Massimo Theatre in Palermo, and in the same year, directed by Terry Clark, the ensemble introduced the Summer Season Concerts with a concert dedicated to the twenty years since Duke Ellington passed away. In February 1996 the SJO was invited by the Italian Society of Afro-American Music Study for the “Afro-American cultured music” event, and performed live from the “Porgy and Bess” transcript by George Gershwin/The Evans, directed then again by Gunther Schuller, and Paolo Fresu as lead singer.
There will be two special
guests during the evening of music on the beach at Mondello. Icon to
world wide jazz, Emil Richards, a Californian artist with
Sicilian origins, it is the third year running that the artist has come
to the Festival at Mondello. Emil Richards has realised over 1.800
sound tracks such as From the experience of Emil Richards to the enthusiasm of a young talented Sicilian boy Gianluca Pellerito, born in 1994, he started to study the drums thanks to an encounter with musician Gianni Cavallaro. In 2002 Gianluca makes his debut on stage with Umbria Jazz, a group from Barklee, directed by Dave Clark. At only 9 years old he had his first big performance at the Massimo Theatre and a year after an encounter with the Brass Group Ignazio Garsia and Vito Giordano. Gianluca has lessons from the musicians Giampaolo Terranova and Giuseppe Urso, his teacher, and his music teacher Rita Collura. In the summer of 2006 Gianluca Pellerito played with the Brass Groups Big Band and was called upon by Rossano Gentili, the leader of the Dirotta su Cuba, as special guest at a concert held at Modena.
And it is from the group
Dirotta su Cuba that Simona Bencini comes from, the artist from
Florence that started to play with Irene Grandi in the girls only group
“Matte in Transferta”, before meeting in 1991 with the funky soul group
Dirotta su Cuba where she became the lead singer. After they won a
platinum disk in 1995 and participated at the Sanremo Festival in 1997,
she left the group in 2001 to go alone. Her first disk “Sorgente” was
released in 2005 with songs written by Pacific and Alez Cremonesi , and
had a duet with her all time friend Irene Grandi called “Ricordero”.
Last year she participated at the Sanremo Festival with a song called
Tempesta which was written along with Elisa. Simona Bencini will play
her new single yet to be released on the 25th of May, “Presto
Arriverò da Te”.
On stage there will also
be Francesca Faggella, also a Radio 105 de-jay who goes on air at
the weekends with her program called “105 in Da Club”, a program
concentrated on the dance scene and international and Italian Rap.
