THE FINALS OF THE STUDENTS TOURNAMENT AND THE
FIRST MATCHES OF THE 5 NATIONS BEACH VOLLEY TOURNAMENT - ALSO AT
MONDELLO BEACH GOLF
A busy day of sport at the World Festival on the Beach. The students
beach volley tournament finished today at around 13.00 in the central
court on the beach at Mondello. The winners of the boys tournament went
to team A from the ITI School “Volta” from Palermo, and the girls
tournament was won by team A from the Cannizzaro school. From the prep
high schools the winners of the boys tournament was won by the school
from Cinisi and the girls from the “Alberico Gentile” school. At the end
of the finals the winning pairs were awarded with special Libertas
plates in a ceremony held on the central beach volley court.
At 14:30 the 5 Nations Tournament began with the international stars. It
started off with a game from Alvarez and Munder from Cuba, against the
Greeks Michaelopoulos and Xenakis, who opened the long awaited
tournament, and to much surprise the Greeks won against the Cubans 2-0.
In the second match the Italians Galli/Fenili won against the Brazilians
Coleho de Brito and Paulao. This afternoon there was also a girls beach
volley game that will carry on tomorrow at 10:00. Following them there
will be more matches from the 5 Nations Tournament.
This afternoon there was also Beach Golf, put forward by the Beach Golf
Association. There were lots of keen golf players and lots of people who
were simply curious to try out this new strange sport on the beach. Once
the teams were made up the game began on this 9 holed course set up on
the beach, with strange looks from the sunbathers. 40 players and 60
caddy girls, who set the course, participated in this experimental
tournament. The winners were Marco and Mauro Lo Curcio, with 28 hits,
two hits behind them were Sergio Di Gaetano and Gabriele Costantino. A
few good golf players from the Villa Airoldi Golf Club played at this
interesting project. Tomorrow in this Club in Palermo the will be a skin
game contest between 4 golf professionals. Giuseppe Marra from Calabria,
ex Italian Champion Felice Crotti, and from Turin Luca Marra (experienced
player who was here last year) and Marco Girando, who grew up in the
same club as the well known bothers Molinari. These same professionals
will be aboard the tall boats in the sail/golf contest.
