A STEP BACK IN TIME IN MONDELLO AT THE WORLD
FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH
A FENCING MATCH TO BE HELD IN PIAZZA VALDESI
This year at the 22nd edition of the World Festival on the best known
beach of Palermo there is something completely new. A fencing match to
be held by the sea shore. Some very old photos of Mondello show a
building known to be some sort of duty office which up until the 900’s
stood in Valdesi Square, and as history tells us formed the border line
where up until the 20’s was where battles were held.
The Albaria organised along with the Sporting Association “Sala d’Armi
Trinacria” a display to promote “Nobel Art” in Palermo. Three weapons,
the sword, sabre and foil, and three encounters for the fencing players
which began on Monday the 14th and 16th of May, to finish off this
evening there will be a match at 19:30 tonight and there will be two
surprise fencing players.
Before the match there will be some determined displays from than 20
athletes from the “Sala d’Arami Trinacria” Association, with the
arbitrage of Franceso Jacono and Salvatore Massa. To begin the event
there will be the “First Swords” group, a group of young athletes who
will play with plastic swords, Gabriele Bordonaro, Davide Petix, Paolo
Seminara, Vittorio Di Giorgio, the next category will be “Pupils” with
Claudia Fasone and Eros Calcara , in the “Youth” category a duel with
swords from Luca Cillari, Manfredi Volpes, Teresa Rozza, Andrea
Campodonico, the sabre will be used in the “Cadets” category by Federica
Passafiume, Rocco Chinnici and Marco Zora
.
The “Sala d’Armi Trinacria” was established a year ago in Palermo, it
was the determination and the will of Maurizio Seminara, Francesco
Passafiume, Giovanni Battista D'Amico, Domenico Chinnici and Andrea
Litro, who all decided to put their experience to use that they gained
in other associations. The weapons room can be found at Palermo’s Sport
Building, a modern structure with plenty of space where this sport can
be carried out.
The president of the “Sala d’Armi Trinacria” Maurizio Seminara, said, “
Our goal is to see fencing live again in Palermo, it is a city lacking
athletes of this sport, I’m sure that the location of the World Festival
on the Beach is an excellent spot where we can re-launch this
magnificent sport”.
