XX Edition World Festival On The Beach
Palermo Mondello 11-22 May 2005

THE NEW JAZZ FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH WENT LIVE. AFTER A SUCCESSFUL EVENING WITH GIANNI CAVALLARO KELLY JOYCE SEXTET IS AWAITED AT 22

A great start for the 4th edition of the New Jazz Festival on the Beach organized during the World Festival on the Beach by the Albaria Windsurfing Club with thanks to the Regional Culture and Arts Departmnet. “Promoting Sicily and its culture allows us to present the extraordinary scenery this island has to offer on an international scale. The connection between the sea and jazz makes the World Festival even more appealing for the Sicilian audience and whoever else attends the village in Mondello” said Alessandro Pagano, town councilor of the Regional Culture and Arts Department.
The first to go on stage last night was Gianni Cavallaro, important Sicilian Jazz player he played at the New Jazz Festival on the beach with a band made up of eleven components, saxophone players Orazio Maugeri, Ignazio Calderone, Gaspare Palazzolo, Francesco Nolasco, trumpet players Vito Giordano, Giovanni Calderone, Rosario Causa and Totò Pizzuro on the trombone. Massimo Merighi on the piano and Franco La Rosa, base player.
Gianni Cavallaro’s drums talk for themselves, he played beside Chet Baker, Lou Bennet, Pepper Adams, Art Farmer, Mal Waldron , Johnny Griffin, Laurindo Almeida, and has played next to great afro-american artists such as Gato Barbieri, Perez Prado, Tony Scott, Stephane Grappelli, Phil Woods and Miriam Makeba. He’s also worked with some of the biggest Italian artists Franco Cerri, Nicola Arigliano, Amedeo Tommasi, Franco D’Andrea, Romano Mussolini and Antonello Vanucchi, he’s also trained lots of young Sicilian Jazz players that have taken part in performances directed by him.
Kelly Joyce Sextet will sing this evening, an ensemble guided by the young french singer Kelly Joyce, who has a successful album and song “Vivre la Vie”, her first piece of work that went straight into the European top 10.
Kelly Joyce was born in Paris in 1982, she was born into a well born family (her parents are made up of a countess and the son of the ex-king of Bantu), she’s an authentic daughter of artists who took up her fathers suggestions, her father is a composer and mother singer and founder of the group “Chocolats”.
Her latest album “Kelly Joyce” is a refined pop album, full of inspiration and with pieces from Burt Bacharech to tango and caribbean rythms to the Folies Bergères.
Kelly Joyce will be accompanied in Mondello by Luca and Marco Campioni, Enrico Guezoni (cello) Raffaele Rebaudengo (viola) andElio Marchesini (percussion), they will play a collection of music from jazz to funky, from rock to blues and south american music.
